Boys Junior Varsity Hockey, Boys Varsity Hockey · Waukesha Wings to Honor and Remember Pewaukee Freshman Derek Harms

On Friday, January 11, 2019, the Waukesha Wings will honor and remember Derek Harms during a memorial puck drop and brief presentation at the start of the 5:45 scheduled Varsity game at the Naga-Waukee Ice Arena. The Arena is located at 2699 Golf Road in Delafied.  The Waukesha Wings is a co-op high school hockey program that includes athletes from Waukesha North, Waukesha South, Waukesha West, Pewaukee, and Catholic Memorial High Schools. The team plays in the Classic 8 Conference.

Derek’s Story

On September 13, 2018, Derek Harms, a Freshman at Pewaukee High School, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 14, a victim of an undiagnosed heart condition called cardiomyopathy. Cardiomyopathy is a heart condition that is often asymptomatic, difficult to diagnose and frequently the cause of sudden cardiac arrest.

Derek was a long time hockey player, coming up through the youth program with plans to play high school hockey with the Waukesha Wings. In addition to hockey, Derek played football, and was also involved in Band, Boy Scouts and other activities. Derek is survived by his parents, Brian and Michelle, his sister, Kristina, and many other relatives and friends that loved him.

Derek’s family has greatly appreciated the outpouring of community support they have experienced since Derek’s death. To honor him, they have invited Project ADAM from Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin to attend this event and provide those in attendance the opportunity to learn more about the importance of CPR/AED education to help prevent death following a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). 1 in 300 youth have an undetected heart condition that puts them at risk for SCA. Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death on school campuses and the number one killer of student athletes. Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing information with you about SCA and the importance of screening, CPR certification and the availability of AEDs.

Staff and volunteers from Project ADAM will be on site from 4:30-7pm, to be present through some of both the JV and Varsity games. Please visit their table at the arena.

Please honor Derek by joining the Waukesha Wings for this memorial event and educational opportunity. For more information about the Waukesha Wings, visit their website at www.waukeshawings.com
