Welcome to the Blackshirt Bands!
Our Waukesha South bands have performed for world-renowned composers, conductors, and clinicians. Our jazz bands have played in New Orleans, the birth-place of jazz, on San Francisco’s Pier 39, and on a dinner cruise in Sydney Harbour, Australia. The Blackshirt Marching Band has marched in London’s New Year’s Day Parade, one of the largest parades in the world and performed for former Vice-President Gore.
In additional, several concert bands and jazz ensembles are offered at South. The Concert Band is the entry-level band, comprised mostly of freshmen and sophomores. The Symphonic Winds and Percussion and Wind Ensemble are comprised of seniors, juniors, some sophomores, and select freshmen. Auditions are required for membership in these elite groups. South High School is very proud of our outstanding jazz program. The South jazz program consists of Jazz I and Jazz II, which are curricular offerings. In order to participate in a jazz ensemble, students must be enrolled as a music student in a large ensemble (band, choir, or orchestra). Exceptions are rare, and in accordance with WSMA rules.
The Waukesha South Bands continue to provide excellent educational opportunities for the students of Waukesha South High School. In addition, the band is one of the most visible and active ambassadors of South High School, both within the community of Waukesha, and throughout the state, country, and world.
